Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
